Letterpress print series

This series contains eight poems composed and reinterpreted from original typewriter writings. Existing writings created via a typewriter were transcribed into handwritten copies, which were then cut, letter by letter, to create new poems, letter by letter. These preexisting writings limited what letters could be used to compose the new poems.

These hand-cut, hand-composed paper poems were explored in several iterations. They were first pressure printed, an image-creating technique in which the original hand-cut poem was run through a press to create a ghost relief, which creates an impression of the hand-cut shapes. Just as letters help form words, space surrounding letters help bring them into form.

These hand-cut poems were further explored by tracing them by hand, with letters separated into one layer and their corresponding cut-out shapes into another. After digitally scanning these two separate layers for each poem, makeshift plates (located on the opposite wall) were designed to produce large scale letterpress prints, which are combined with aerosol painted text. Each poem involves multiple color runs and textures to create one-of-a-kind prints with poems that touch on topics of communicative breakdown.
